Large pools of water, marshes and dry land alternate. In bird hides and at the various lookout posts you can observe the various waterfowl and with a bit of luck you will also see a flamingo population settle down.

Beach & Sea

On the beach and by the sea you can have a wonderful holiday. The beach is 50 meters away from the apartments in a quiet bay. The soft (sand no stones) seabed slopes gently. You can stand up to 100 meters in the sea. Ideal for all ages and the disabled have also been considered in La Ràpita! There is a disabled place on the beach so that people with a disability can also enjoy the beach, the sun and the sea!
So sunbathe and enjoy among the Spaniards. This means that it is pleasantly busy in the morning and that after 13:00 the beach is completely yours!

There is also a "dog beach" in La Ràpita! This means that part of the beach has been made available to enjoy all the pleasures that the sea brings with it together with your four-legged friend! On the beach you will find several 'chirinquitos' or beach bars where you can relax while enjoying a "fresh" drink and delicious tapas.
In high season there are sunbeds and sunshades for rent on the beach. The boulevard is right on your beach. Here you will find 2 of the best restaurants in the area for a delicious lunch or a romantic dinner with a sea view.....

Jardin de Papagayo

Near Peñiscola (in Benicarlo) is the "Jardin del Papagayo": a small zoo mainly focused on parrots that you can feed yourself in the aviaries. But there are also other animals to see, including kangaroos, turtles, water pigs, ring-tailed lemurs, etc. . Super fun for children too!
They also have a 'climbing' route and a western village where the kids can walk among the kangaroos.

Peniscola

Peñiscola is located just above the capital of the region, Castellón de la Plana and is known for its 14th century castle which is situated on a huge rock that you can see from far away. The castle, strategically located on a peninsula and built between 1294 and 1307, stands on the ruins of an old Arab citadel. It is a half hour drive by car. You can stroll around and visit shops while you walk up to the castle. The castle is open to the public and offers a beautiful view of the village and often there is also a changing exhibition in one of the castle rooms. In the middle of winter many shops are closed, please take this into account. You can take a boat trip from the port of Peñiscola in "Golondrina" to see Peñiscola from the sea.

Morella

This beautiful old medieval village is located about an hour's drive inland. Morella is known for its blankets and knitting. You can buy lovely warm sweaters here for the Dutch winter. There are also many special shops. You will also find several museums with archaeological discoveries (dinosaurs and fossils found in the area) and you can visit the castle. It is a nice day trip to see more of the interior of the province of Castellon. Keep in mind that it is a lot cooler in the winter, a cardigan or jacket is not an unnecessary luxury!

Sanctuario Virgen de la Balma-Zorita

Sanctuary Virgen de la Balma-Zorita is an impressive place to visit and can be combined well with a visit to Sant Mateu or Morella. It consists of half church (built in 1667) and half cave, where of course a Marian apparition took place (otherwise it would not be a "sanctuary"). A shepherd was beckoned to the cave by a light and his paralyzed arm was healed. Since then, the place has been a place of pilgrimage where people went to be delivered from the devil or to be cured of illnesses. At the beginning of the cave there is a small restaurant that is also a hotel. At the weekend the sanctuary is open from 11:00 to 20:00, during the week it is closed at noon (between 13:00 and 16:30) and on Monday all day.

You have to try a delicious cup of coffee with such a sweet croissant on one of the many terraces.
